How to make Gak: a Follow Instructions activity
If you hand me a ball of Gak, I’m going to spend the next half hour pulling it apart, making crazy shapes, and watching it spread and flatten. It’s going to be the same for your child. It won’t matter if they’re 3 or 18 playing with it will bring a smile to their face.
If you’ve got younger kids, they’ll think you’re magic that moment they add the borax and the mixture changes. In fact, watching it solidify may be even more fun than actually playing with it.
You’ll probably have everything on hand, except the borax. You can find borax in the laundry section of your grocery store. Now, we know some people have questioned the safety of borax. While we are no expert, we do believe that with normal precautions (avoid getting it in eyes or ingestion), that it is safe to use. If you are worried about it’s safety, do not make this activity.
Homemade Gak
Materials
¾ cup cold water
1 cup Elmer’s glue
Food coloring
½ cup hot water
1 teaspoon borax
2 mixing bowls
Directions
Step 1: In first bowl add cold water.
Step 2: Add Elmer’s glue to the cold water. Mix.
Step 3: Add food coloring.
Step 4: In second bowl add hot water.
Step 5: Dissolve borax in hot water.
Step 6: Slowly pour the mixture from the second bowl into the first.
Step 7: Pour off any extra water.
