Helping local and worldwide communitities
What do families, refugees, survivors of human trafficking, the elderly and parents of children with special needs have in common with Smarter Parenting?
Smarter Parenting was created to strengthen families around the world. Providing these proven behavioral techniques online had some predicted consequences and some surprises. We soon learned that this website is also the means of helping different groups of people locally and around the world. We continue to work with families who contact us via our website and on social media but it has also led to collaborations with many different agencies. Some have included those working with victims of human trafficking and sex slavery, Alzheimer and Dementia patients, refugees, children with Special Needs and pediatricians.
This report gives you an idea of the scope of what Smarter Parenting is doing in helping people.
Smarter Parenting in Africa
Partnering with Operation Underground Railroad, (O.U.R.) Smarter Parenting provided the training for agencies in Uganda, Africa using the same skills found on the website. Operation Undergound Railroads main mission is to end child slavery and human trafficking. Once a child is rescued and placed in a secure environment, treatment is needed. These skills helps to them on the road to recovery. Smarter Parenting also provides continued coaching to these agencies through the internet. There is a consistent collaboration between these agencies and Smarter Parenting. Watch the Aftercare Report video below to learn more.
We are also providing training to people who are going into countries to help O.U.R. with their mission by providing them training before they leave.
The internet allows us to connect with others who share our mission of helping children and families.
We have also received requests from around the country and the world to collaborate and share our materials. I will share a few. For example, we received a request from cerebralpalsyguidance.com to talk about ADHD and Cerebral Palsy. They will have a blog post that will be featured on Smarter Parenting in a few weeks. We are also collaborating with Rainbow Child Care Centers which has schools in 15 states in the United States. We have also featured a blog post from PM Pediatrics on Smarter Parenting and they will be featuring something from us on their website soon.
We continue to engage and build relationships with online entities who are helping children.
Local Community Support
Smarter Parenting also provided training to the IASIS healthcare team working with refugees in Utah. This training focused on helping front line workers understand some of the challenges working with refugees. It was also an opportunity to share with them the Smarter Parenting resource.
We also provided printouts on Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as well as free advice during the Run-for-Refugee event in Provo, Utah. The event was used to raise money to help refugees who have moved into Salt Lake City, Utah.
Our efforts continue to work toward helping the refugee population in Utah adjust to life in a new country. Currently we are working to collaborate on services for these families in the Salt Lake City area.
Working with the elderly – Alzheimer and Dementia patients
While Smarter Parenting skills are focused on helping children and parents it has been amazing to see how these skills can be used by various people of all ages. The skills found on Smarter Parenting are also being implemented in a care facility for the elderly. These patients suffer from Alzheimers and Dementia and caring for them can be difficult. Tamara shares her experience of using these skills in her workplace and shares an example of how it helps patients in the video below.
Working with local Pediatricians
Pediatricians in the Salt Lake Valley has helped us expand our ability to help families. These pediatricians offered to give of their time to film help videos for parents with children suffering from various issues including ADHD and Autism. Our collaboration is an effort to help parents know what to do BEFORE they visit a physician and to provide tips to help parents with behavior problems at home. We are grateful for the generosity of these pediatricians for offering their time and expertise in order to help children. We continue to work together to improve information for parents in need.
Children with Special Needs
Smarter Parenting received a request from the Utah Parent Center to use our Correcting Behaviors videos in their training courses. The Center provides ongoing support for parents with children of Special Needs.
The mission of the Utah Parent Center (UPC or Center) is to help parents help their children, youth and young adults with all disabilities to live included, productive lives as members of the community.
The Correcting Behaviors lesson is used to help parents establish good boundaries. We have shared this video with them freely and have worked to provide them with any additional materials they need to help them help parents of children with special needs.
Making connections at conferences and training sessions
Our efforts to reach the people have included participating in conferences where we can meet with people. These conferences help us connect with parents, grandparents as well as people who work with children and need additional resources to help them.
Smarter Parenting has also presented at the Pediatric staff meetings for Intermountain Healthcare in their facility on State Street in Murray. Providing information to pediatrician about additional resources for parents and for their patients.
